summer trends i love
This season we’ve really seen incredible expressions of colour, styles, shapes and patterns make their way from runways to mainstream fashion.
Everything is just so fun it’s hard not to want to dive headfirst into all the new trends. So I’ve broken down some of my favourites for summer and included some tips on how to rock them.
PRINTS
If there’s one thing you can say for certain about this summer’s fashion trends, is the mega boom of bright colours and psychedelic prints.
From crazy patterns to tie dye, 70’s inspired prints have really made an impact across the board.
Wear them together for some iconic pattern mixing (remember the pattern mixing rule: always pair a bigger pattern with a smaller one).
Go all-in and rock it head to toe…
Or choose your favourite piece and pair it with basics to give it the spotlight it deserves.
SILHOUETTES
Something that I’m really enjoying about this season’s trends are the proportions - wide-leg pants, tiny crop tops, huge platform sandals. I Iove the drama it brings to everyday outfits.
Puffy Sleeves
I love this trend because it’s pretty universal, puffy sleeves are so flattering on all body types.
They’re also a great option for this season as you can rock a longer sleeve while still keeping it summery.
Tops with puffy sleeves are easy to style as they pair well with both loose and tight bottoms.
Go all in with a dress that has volume from sleeve to hem for a truly iconic ‘fit.
Tip: This might be a trend you want to try on in store before purchasing online as it’s definitely a stylized look!
Platform Sandals
The bigger the better is always the rule for platforms. And I love that they’re back on the scene in a big way.
Snag yourself a pair of brightly coloured sandals that will make an impact on your wardrobe.
Platforms are an easy way to add a few inches and some edginess to your fit.
Make a statement with some extra high sandals or grab a patterned pair like these incredible cow print ones from La Moda.
Keep it casual and let your platforms do the talking!
If you’ve been thinking about joining the platform bandwagon, this is the summer to do it! Whether you’re going all in with a 4 inch pair or playing it safe with 2 inches, it’s a great way to add some style without needing to teeter on a pair of stilettos or tie yourself into some espadrilles.
Wide Leg Pants
Similar to the resurgence of flared pants, designers have been favouring the wide fit and I am here for it.
Wide leg pants are maybe the closest you’ll get to wearing pj’s while looking put together and stylish.
Keep it casual and summery in linen or cotton, and pair with minimal jewelry and a flowy top.
Or dress it up all the way with accessories to match.
The best part about wide leg pants for the summer is how light and forgiving they are. They look good on everyone and fit a wide variety of styles!
Tip: Make sure your pants fit and are tailored correctly. You don’t want to look like you’re drowning in fabric if they’re too long, or look like you’re wearing pants that are ill-fitting (eg. if they’re hitting you at the shin when they’re supposed to be at the ankle).
MATCHING SETS
If you know me, you know how much I love a matching set. And this is their season! On nearly every site and in almost every store you can find them in all shapes and sizes.
What I love the most about a set is how easy it is to make a cohesive outfit and a really striking fashion statement.
Choosing a set in a solid colour makes for a bold look that can be dressed up or down with the change of a shoe.
Finding a set that can be worn as an outfit but also works as individual pieces is basically like scoring three looks in one!
The perfect ‘fit that’s easy to layer over a bathing suit and looks good enough for a post beach day patio drink.
Take a shortcut and opt for a jumpsuit instead of two separates! I love every single one from NooWorks.
There you have it - my favourite things about this summer’s fashion trends.
Remember, even though you might want to try every single trend, it’s still important to try to buy ethical, buy smart and buy local! Try not to get sucked into the fast fashion whirlwind of trend cycles and make sure that what you’re buying makes sense for you and your style.
