winter style with comfort

As someone who has resisted wearing runners outside of physical activity for my whole life, it has been interesting to see the difference the pandemic has created in my wardrobe.

The year that replaced parties and travelling with staying at home and not leaving your city, has not surprisingly had an impact on the fashion and street style. From brick and mortars to online sales, it’s pretty clear that many brands have pivoted to showcase or focus on comfort.

But how do you properly integrate this laid-back trend into your style without ending up in an overplayed tie dye tracksuit or sinking to Birkenstocks-and-socks levels of fashion don’ts?

First, it’s important to remember that comfort does not equal lazy or unpolished. You can still be mega comfortable and look totally put together.

My favourite way to accomplish this is to pair one or two of your ‘regular wardrobe’ pieces with your ‘comfort wardrobe’ pieces. For example, wearing a tracksuit with heeled boots or an oversized jacket with a nice pair of pants.

This trick also works for hair and makeup. Don’t get sloppy with your hair styling - a polished ponytail or freshly blown out locks can elevate a comfortable look. The same goes for makeup - taking a few minutes to do a simple face can make a big difference in making your look more stylish and less frumpy.

Second, don’t be afraid to play with COLOUR.

Pair your neutrals and blacks with a a bright colour or pattern.

This technique works best when the pop of colour is a large garment (like a jacket or pair of pants). If you’re trying to work in colour through something smaller like your shoes or bag, it’s best to add another piece as well so the eye can bounce between the two.

Sometimes creating a stylish look is purely about colour choices - mixing and matching neutrals with a pop of colour makes for a fashionable, edgy outfit.

You can amped up even the simplest fits by just adding a little colour.

Third, find a really great jacket or coat.

Throw that on top of your outfit and you’re good to go. Whether it’s a stylish puffer, a vintage jean jacket or a funky fur - make your jacket your statement and forget about the rest.

My fourth and final piece of advice for you is to have fun with it! Since we aren’t going to clubs or attending festivals, make dressing up and going outside an occasion to flex your style.
