tackling business casual in the post-wfh era
It’s no surprise that the workplace has seen some major shifts over the last year and a half. With many offices making the switch from work-from-home to in-person, we’re seeing that the previous standards of business casual have changed, as casual wear has become trendier and more chic than ever.
After spending a year sitting at their dining room table in sweats with their cat on their laps, many workers don’t want to go back to the days of tight skirts, heels and uncomfortable button-ups.
So where does that leave us?
We’re in a totally new era of business casual, that has really opened up the boundaries of what is and isn’t suitable. I’ve broken down some of the ways that you can stay work appropriate while remaining trendy and as comfortable as you can!
basics are key
It should come as no surprise that the secret to a good work wardrobe is a great set of basics. This is a great way to ensure that you have a solid base to work from, and when in doubt you can keep it simple.
In order to feel comfortable and powerful even in the most basic outfit, incredible tailoring and high-quality fabrics is imperative. This way you can pull off something as simple as a tee and wide-leg dress pants and make it look chic and office appropriate.
I’m firm believer in "if-it-works-buy-it-in-every-colour”. Having that kind of ease in your work wardrobe will make it so much easier to re-wear outfits. Switching up your shirt from the classic white to a neutral or other shade is a great way to achieve this.
Layer up those basics for a trendy and put-together look that is comfortable but still feels work ready.
Never underestimate the power of a black turtleneck to both elevate your look and keep you warm in your air conditioned office.
GOOD SWEATERS
Much like good basics, good sweaters can take a simple outfit and make it fabulous.
I know it’s not the same as your favourite hoodie, but pulling on a cozy sweater might be the work-appropriate next best thing.
Wear it tucked in or left out, but make sure to pair with bottoms that look tailored and professional.
The best thing about a big sweater is being able to throw it over just about anything - including a skirt or dress.
Make a statement with a punchier colour or go for a full monochrome look.
blazers make it alright
Blazers are super in right now (if you haven’t already check out my last blog post about trendy fall fashion) and what a better way to make your look scream office appropriate then to throw on a blazer.
Wear it over your shoulders to feel like a boss bitch and add that extra layer of warmth.
Include it in your layered look to take it from casual to business casual.
Pairing your suit with a plain crew neck keeps your look fresh and modern and allows you to forgo the uncomfortable tucked in button-up.
(This is a shot of one of my beautiful clients, Natasha, taken at our Mini Portrait sessions in September. She’s styled in a suit from Kit & Ace.)
The crew neck trick works just as well even if you’re just wearing the blazer half of a suit. Pull off jeans by ensuring that they’re in excellent condition and fit you immaculately.
no more heels
Pandemic fashion has definitely made a move towards more practical and comfortable footwear. I think we can collectively agree that we just can’t be bothered to wear heels every day of the week.
These casual leather boots are elevated with the added platform and pair wonderfully with this monotone look, adding a masculine element.
Rock a pair of sneakers to the office, but make sure they’re clean as can be and your top half is looking just as sharp.
If you live in a rainy climate a flat bootie is a great way to ensure your feet stay dry and you stay comfortable and stylish.
It’s no secret that wild sneakers are having their hey-day right now. Snag yourself a pair and make them your statement shoe.
A great example of someone who does this really well is the character Stella in the second season of The Morning Show. She’s always rocking a trendy pair of Prada sneakers. In fact, she has a great wardrobe to look at for inspiration on trendy workplace attire.
your greatest tool is accessories
It’s true!
A super easy way to elevate your paired down look for the office is to add a pair of statement earrings or a simple but bold necklace.
Layering bracelets and necklaces is a great way to show individuality and style.
Switching up your accessories can also help freshen up a look you like to rewear.
Belts are the easiest and most functional way to add a bit of interest to your office attire.
when in doubt, black
And if all else fails.. there’s always black.
For those days when you really can’t be bothered, it’s always a good idea to have some really solid black pieces in your wardrobe that pair together for a classic look.
Just cause it’s black doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Change it up by choosing unique pieces, like this square neck top.
You might even be able to get away with wearing black jeans (depending on your workplace). But make sure they’re not faded or ripped.
Add a bit of style to your one-tone fit by playing with different textures and layering.
