6 ways to get your city patio summer ready
As sunny days and warmer nights begin making their appearance, now is a perfect time to pay attention to the patio you’ve been neglecting.
Set yourself up for success this season by giving your outdoor space some love and attention and you’ll be able to reap the rewards all summer long.
1. pick a Purpose
Before deciding what to do with your patio area, it’s important to think about how you’re going to be utilize it.
Do you use your outdoor space to entertain guests and eat dinner al fresco or is it a spot just for you to sit and relax in the afternoon sun? Maybe you want it to be your own private sanctuary where you read or make art.
Let the function determine how you furnish and decorate it. This is especially important if you’re working with a smaller patio, as you have less room to work with therefore less flexibility.
Whatever the purpose, it’s a good idea to begin your planning with a list of what you want to do. Think about what pieces of furniture might be needed and how many people you want to accommodate.
2. create a functional space
Now that you’ve chosen a function, it’s time to think about how to best utilize your space.
Planning to host dinners? Add a bar cart that you can easily roll from indoors to outside, keeping your drinks and appetizers within arm's reach.
Using the space for a personal oasis? Whether it’s a daybed, hammock or lounge chair, add a comfy place to sit back and put up your feet.
Afternoon to evening hangouts? Find a bench that has storage for extra pillows, seat warmers and blankets.
Love to dine outside but have a small space? Bistro tables are the perfect solution and can be easily tucked away.
Something you’ll want to keep in mind when planning your outdoor space is environmental factors for your location.
Things you may have to account and modify for include wind direction, direct sun exposure and proximity to trees or hedges.
For a rainy climate like Vancouver, outdoor furniture made of hardwoods like teak or shorea, aluminum, recycled plastic, or resin wicker stand up best. You’ll extend the life of outdoor furniture by storing it inside during the off season, covering with weatherproof covers, or applying sealants.

3. boost privacy
Having any outdoor space in the city is a luxury but more often than not it means privacy is limited.
Creating a sense of enclosure in your outdoor room will make it feel like a secluded oasis.
Use a privacy screen or lattice wall to block a bad view or nosey neighbours.
Add gauzy, flowy curtains that can be easily removed.
A free-standing plant wall will help create privacy as plants grow and will add to the atmosphere of your space.
4. choose furniture
Since you are working with such a small space, you want to make use of every part of the patio but not overcrowd either. It’s all about finding balance.
Plan your small patio layout. If you have trouble visualizing, sketch your layout design.
One of the most common mistakes when purchasing outdoor furniture is not measuring your space properly before making your purchase. So don’t forget to measure your space!
Try placing furniture and seating along the edges to ensure sure you still have enough room to easily move around the patio.
Choose furniture that has multiple functions, like a floor ottoman that can be used as extra seating or a table that doubles as storage.
Rather than buying a bulky matching set, shop for individual pieces that’ll better fit your space and give it a unique and eclectic feel.
Don’t be afraid to move furniture around once you place it on the patio. Remember, nothing is permanent so have fun with it!
If you’re trying to decide between price points on your patio furniture keep in mind that you get what you pay for. High-end pieces typically have stronger materials that are more fade-resistant and able to repel water better. They usually have longer warranties as well.
On the other hand, if you want some fun lounge chairs and end tables, there’s nothing wrong with buying a cheaper set. Just keep in mind that they will probably fade or break down after a season or two. You might save money initially, but replacement costs add up over time and you could end up spending more in the long run.
5. planters
Bring colour and texture to your patio with a variety of potted plants.
An integral part of any outdoor room, greenery adds vibrancy and really pulls the space together.
Going vertical is a smart way to display plants when you’re short on space and it doubles up your planters as privacy screens.
6. Finishing touches
With all of the interesting shapes, textures and colors of patio furniture it’s easy to forget about what’s right under your feet. Make your outdoor space even cozier by adding a rug or some temporary flooring.
Peel and stick linoleum or interlocking floor mats are great ways to make to make your patio feel finished.
Weather-proof outdoor rugs are great to help prevent furniture from moving around on smooth surfaces, provide cushioning for bare feet and give you an opportunity to add a splash of color or design. Choose from a wide range of shapes, colours and thicknesses.
To make your space usable any time of day, don’t forget about lighting.
Good lighting will not only help you enjoy your patio after the sun goes down but will also draw your eye vertically — important in a small space.
There are so many outdoor lighting options, check out Amazon or IKEA for budget-friendly options. Make sure to use outdoor cords and light bulbs.
